Pendembu on the map

According to the foundation ‘Save the Children’, Sierra Leone is officially the worst place in the world for a child to be born.
Access to skilled maternal care is very low. Only about one out of four births (24,6%) in Sierra Leone were delivered in a health facility, while 78,8% percent were delivered at home.
The major focus of our strategy will be on reducing mortality rates, especially for infants and pregnant women.

Pendembu is situated in the Eastern district of Sierra Leone, it is a small and remote town.
In Pendembu a mother and child have about 1/5 odds at getting through child-birth. Not only does Pendembu not have any adequate facilities enough for its needs but the cost of traveling to the nearest hospital is both expensive and impractical for a pregnant woman (3 hours on a motor bike). The provision of this medical facility then would both mean that women could receive treatment to the lead up to pregnancy, pregnancy itself, birth, post partum and also assisting women with children up to 5 years of age.
